Chair Style 2015

While we were doing a shoot, we came across a beautiful piece of furniture. I had to write a post about it. The SM05 chair by Cees braakman. Designed in 1958, it’s one of the first chairs produced entirely from steel wire. It’s a very functional piece and a perfect example of what we like to call ‘modest modernism’. It fits in a very wide range of interiors, never screaming for attention, but always completing a certain kind of style.

The SM05 is regarded as one of the signature pieces of Braakman. It’s amazing to know he started working in the industry at the age of seventeen an through studying the works of Herman Miller & Charles and Ray Eames found his own niche in experimenting with materials and proportion.

The chair featured here is one of the first production cycle, so it has a certain kind patina and is a bit worn but that gives the piece that much character. You feel there’s a story behind it.
